Teaching band in the age of coronavirus

Norwalk band teacher shows us how she will teach band while keeping her students safe.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Everything looks different this school year. And there were lots of questions about how teachers would be able to keep kids social distancing, especially in classes like band. Norwalk band teacher Elaine Menke gave families a look at what band will look like at Lakewood Elementary.

Mrs. Menke posted a video on YouTube, walking families through her classroom. From arrows to safely direct traffic, to coordinated instrument drop offs, and socially distant small group lessons, she shows how her beginning band students will still get to make music this year.

Concerts and big group practices won't happen for now, but they will still be able to learn how to play their instruments, and she says, hopefully, have a lot of fun.
