Initial and continuing jobless claims both up 15% in Iowa last week

$12,894,945.67 in unemployment insurance benefits were paid out in the state last week, an increase of $2,241,562.17 (21%) from the previous week.

8,236 initial unemployment claims were filed last week in Iowa, an increase of 1,095 (15.3%) from the previous week.

7,628 initial claims for the week of Dec. 27, 2020-Jan. 2, 2021 were by people who work and live in Iowa, and 608 were by individuals who work in Iowa but live outside the state.

"For the week ending Jan. 2, 2021, nearly 68.6% of claimants indicated their claims were not COVID-19 related, which is a decrease from 70.6% the previous week," Iowa Workforce Development said in a release.

The number of Americans seeking unemployment aid fell slightly to 787,000, according to the latest U.S. Department of Labor statistics.

Continuing claims for the week were 43,901, an increase of 5,878 (15.4%) from the previous week.

The following industries had the most claims, IWD said;

  • Construction (2,026)
  • Manufacturing (1,698)
  • Industry Not Available - Self-employed, Independent Contractors, etc (731)
  • Administrative, Support, Waste Management, and Remediation Services (555)
  • Retail Trade (469)

Additional data released for last week: 

  • $681,000 in Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) benefits paid, which were retroactive payments as the program ended July 25, 2020. Since April 4, 2020, a total of $1,628,703,433 in FPUC benefits has been paid.
  • $4,089,255 paid in Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) benefits. Since April 13, 2020, a total of $174,777,109.54 in PUA benefits has been paid.
  • $6,275,564.11 paid in Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) benefits. Since May 27, 2020, a total of $185,885,273.85 in PEUC benefits has been paid.
