Scammers now targeting Child Tax Credit

Here's how you can protect your money from scammers.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Phishing emails, robocalls and weird texts. So many of us are used to scammers trying to get our hard-earned money.

But a new scam is emerging this summer as people are getting their advanced payments of the Child Tax Credit.

Christopher Miller with the Internal Revenue Service says there's one big way to avoid scammers.

"Choose direct deposit to make sure that that money goes right from us into your bank account every month," Miller said. "And that way, you don't have to worry about having a check in the mail. But certainly, as it relates to the advanced payments of the child tax credit, we want people to remain vigilant."

Families should expect to see their checks by July 15 if they are eligible. Remember— there is a tool on the IRS website to show if your family is eligible to receive the funds.
