DES MOINES – City leaders got their first look at the future site of a Hy-Vee store on Court Avenue Monday.
Hy-Vee officials, along with Knapp Properties, led Des Moines officials on a tour of the property on 420 Court Avenue.
“The main goal in concepting this is to fill a need in the downtown community,” said Josh Asche, District Vice President of Distributions for Hy-Vee.
Both city and Hy-Vee officials say a grocery store in downtown Des Moines has been a “missing cog in the system.”
The 35,000 square foot store will include their Market Grille Restaurant with a patio and a Starbucks. 81 apartments will sit on top of the Hy-Vee with 110 parking spaces for residents and shoppers.
Assuming each apartment will be assigned one parking space, that leaves just 29 for the rest of Hy-Vee shoppers. But officials deny there will be any problems with parking.
“I want to dispel the myth that there’s a shortage of parking,” said Des Moines Assistant City Manager Matt Anderson. “There’s absolutely not a shortage of parking. You can go to the city parking garage immediately to the north of here and find about 300 empty spaces right now.”
“We just need to do a better job of telling people where it is, getting them to it, better signage, better outreach and communication,” he continued. “The parking is here.”
The new Hy-Vee is slated to open November of 2016.
