Des Moines woman charged in bathtub drowning death of infant son

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines woman was arrested for child endangerment leading to death Friday and taken to Polk County Jail, according to arrest records.

Twyla Schiebel, 31, left her 9-month-old in a seat in the bathtub with no safety belt to read to her 9-year-old in another room on June 16, according to court documents.

Police say when she returned to the bathroom, the infant was lying on his back with his face under water. The infant was taken to Blank Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Schiebel told police she realizes the baby “would have been able to get out of the seat on his own.”

Her bond was set at $25,000 after her Friday court appearance. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 10.
