We are breaking down the coronavirus trends across the state of Georgia. 

State and federal officials with the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are continually monitoring the spread of the virus. They are also working hand-in-hand with the World Health Organization to track the spread around the world and to stop it.

Key Facts: 

  • There have been 1,544 deaths in Georgia, with the state's earliest reported death on March 5. Over the last 14 days (5/1-5/14), the average daily increase in newly reported deaths was 29.43. Over the previous 14-day period (4/17-4/30), the average daily increase in newly reported deaths was 34.14.
  • There have been 35,977 cases confirmed in Georgia, with the state's earliest reported case on Feb. 1. Over the last 14 days, the average daily increase in newly confirmed cases was 694.07. Over the previous 14-day period, the average daily increase in newly confirmed cases was 661.86.
  • There have been 6,374 total patients hospitalized in Georgia during the pandemic, according to the Department of Public Health's cumulative total. Over the last 14 days, the average daily increase in new patients was 84.86. Over the previous 14-day period, the average daily increase in new patients was 140.29. 
  • The Georgia Emergency Management Agency began reporting current statewide hospitalizations on May 1. That day they reported 1,500 current hospitalizations. By the most recent report on May 13, there were 1,091 current hospitalizations. 
  • Gov. Brian Kemp's statewide shelter-in-place order expired at midnight on April 30. However, his order for the elderly and medically-fragile remains in effect until June 12.
  • All public school buildings in Georgia are closed through the end of the school year
  • Public Health Emergency remains in effect.

Douglas County receives donation of PPE

Douglas County received a donation of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) worth thousands of dollars for front-line employees from Medline Industries, Inc., they said. 

“Earlier this week, I received an email from County Administrator, Mark Teal about the donation and I cannot thank Medline enough for their generosity,” Jason Milhollin, Director of Emergency Management said.

Since 1 p.m. data, only 119 new cases in evening update

Since the DPH released its afternoon numbers, they are only reporting 119 new cases. As of 7 p.m. there are 35,977 conifrmed COVID-19 cases in the state. They said 1,544 people have died from the virus. The state has tested more than 285,000 people. 

Zoo Atlanta to reopen this weekend

Zoo Atlanta will reopen on Saturday, the venue said in a release on Thursday.

The zoo says it will be instituting "enhanced protocols and procedures" to facilitate a safe reopening. 

Those will include a timed ticketing system "to control capacity and limit the number of guests who are inside the zoo at any given time" a release said. The zoo did not say specifically what that number will be.

Latest numbers from the Dept. of Public Health

The Georgia Department of Health announced new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday. As of 1:30 p.m., there are 35,858 confirmed cases of the virus and 1,527 deaths reported. This is up from the 35,332 confirmed cases and 1,505 deaths that they announced at the same time on Wednesday.

Of the 35,858 confirmed cases, 3621 are in Fulton, 2644 are in DeKalb, 2532 are in Gwinnett, 2334 are in Cobb and 2119 are in Hall. For a breakdown by county, view the 11Alive interactive map.

They said 6,345 patients have been hospitalized with COVID-19.
