After being found not guilty of murdering his mother, Jason Carter and his wife Shelly spoke to Local 5′s Stephanie Angleson about how their family plans to move forward.

Jason was found civilly liable for Shirley’s 2015 death following a December 2017 trial in Marion County. But a set of jurors from Pottawattamie County acquitted Jason of murder in the case last week.

“I never got to tell my mom that I loved her”, Jason Carter said. “I’d really like to tell her that I loved her.”

Carter’s attorneys said the influx of new information presented to them as part of the criminal trial clearly showed that Jason had nothing to do with his mother’s death.

“There was only one correct outcome to this case,” said attorney Allison Kanne. “If Jason was found guilty, my entire belief in the justice system would’ve been shaken to its core.”
