DES MOINES – The U.S. House of Representatives failed Thursday to pass an immigration bill that would have eliminated the diversity visa lottery system and provided funding for a southern border wall. It didn’t offer DACA recipients a pathway to citizenship.
“You have to live an environment where jobs are not there but violence is there daily,” said Jaime Leiva, who has lived and worked in Iowa for more than sixteen years.
Leiva illegally crossed the United States border when he was ten. However, he eventually became a legal citizen and attended college. He understands the frustration but doesn’t think separating families is the right policy.
