ALTOONA — Thursday marks the first day Iowans can place wagers on sporting events in the state.

It’s been nearly seven months since William Hill announced it would be the sportsbook operator at Prairie Meadows.

“I think it’s a great addition,” said Iowa Senator Tony Bisignano (D – Des Moines). “It’s in time for the fall football season, the Iowa-Iowa State game. It’s going to be good for Iowa, good for sports enthusiasts and I’m happy we were able to do it.”

Sports betting passed the statehouse last session and was signed into law by Gov. Kim Reynolds in May.
