Pork Expo highlights impact of Mexico tariffs

DES MOINES – Iowa pork producers are feeling the pinch of Mexico's new tariffs.

Mexico gets the largest amount of U.S. pork when compared to other countries. Much of that comes from Iowa.

At the Iowa Pork Expo at the state fairgrounds, producers were not only learning about the latest trends in the industry, but also talking about how’s Mexico’s tariff is hurting their livelihoods.

“If the tariffs stay on for a long time and go from 10 to 20 percent, that’s going to have a chilling affect on our price and it will hurt pork producers,” said Dr. Howard Hill, a pork producer.

The new tariffs are Mexico’s retaliation after President Trump imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Mexico and much of the rest of the world.
