DES MOINES – Abshir Omar has announced his campaign for Des Moines City Council Ward 3. The Somali Refugee is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, and hopes to replace Councilwoman Christine Hensley, who decided not to seek reelection after her curent term is complete.

Born in the midst of the Somalian civil war, Omar and his family fled to a United Nations refugee camp in northern Kenya. Once their visa was approved and they came to America, his family has since been able to live a prosperous life.

He attended Iowa State University and has been a Des Moines resident since 2012, where he owns a small business.

“I consider serving on the council not as politics, but as public service.” Omar said. “I want to do all I can to contribute to preserving all that’s great about Des Moines and to making it an even better place to live, work and raise a family in the future. To help build a brighter future for people whether they are fleeing persecution or poverty.”
