DES MOINES – A lot of Iowans heard a buzzing or a loud noise on their phones around 2:53 p.m. on Thursday, notifying them of a “test Amber Alert.”

Local 5 called the Department of Public Safety, the people who normally send out statewide Amber Alerts. They told us it was not sent from their office.

Officials at the department are trying to figure out where it came from. They say it could have come from the national level, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

A spokeswoman from NCMEC said that “during testing procedures to diagnose an unrelated issue with our software, a WEA message was inadvertently issued. The message was sent statewide and canceled immediately. Our technology team has rectified the error.”
