Packers Sign Korey Toomer

The Packers took the field for the first time since roster cuts as they began preparing for Chicago. At the same time there were plenty of moves being made up in the front office.

Fan favorite Jake Kumerow survived Saturday’s cuts, but is out at least for the first eight weeks of the season. On Monday the Packers placed the wide receiver on injured reserve due to the shoulder injury he suffered on an 82-yard touchdown against the Steelers.

“I’ve put in a lot of work, and I couldn’t have done it without a good group of guys beside me. Having a good group of quarterbacks to helps, bu It feels good. Got a lot of work ahead of me as well. I’m just trying to get back as soon as possible,” said Jake Kumerow.

“The shoulder injury is a big bummer. It’s a little setback, but there’s nothing much I can do other than just have a good attitude towards it. Take it day by day, and do what the trainers tell me.”

Taking Kumerow’s spot on the roster is linebacker Korey Toomer. The veteran who spent the best years of his career to date with the Seahawks with stops with the Chargers and 49ers. On Saturday Toomer was waived by San Francisco. It was a quick turn around for Toomer, who said he received a call about coming to Green Bay not long after getting home to Las Vegas.

“I’m happy to be here. This is a football town, a football team. I love this place already. The vibe I got was great. I got the feeling that we’ll be successful,” said Korey Toomer.

“I’ve been to the Super Bowl with the Seahawks. So I know what a winning organization looks like, and this is one. I can see that just coming in here and seeing how everybody takes care of one another. How we’re all communicating, we’re friends here. They welcomed me in with open arms. It’s going to be a great fit.”

The inside linebacker position became one of concern after Jake Ryan was lost for the season with a torn ACL, and third round pick Oren Burks sidelined with a shoulder injury. Toomer no doubt adds a veteran presence to what was a young group, but he’s here to do more than just add depth. Toomer is here to start.

“Special teams is not the reason I’m here. Me, myself, I feel like I personally feel like I’m a starter. If I didn’t feel that way, I shouldn’t be here. I feel like I’m going to come in, learn this defense, and I’m going to contribute on defense and special teams as well,” said Toomer.

After cuts another area the Packers were thin was at running back. Aaron Jones is currently serving a two game suspension, and Brian Gutekunst kept just two on the roster. Monday the Packers made another move by signing Darius Jackson off the Cowboys practice squad and waiving cornerback Herb Waters.
