Iowa State Patrol sees significant rise in speeding drivers

Speeding drivers of 100 mph or more are up by 58% based on a four-year average, according to ISP.

DES MOINES, Iowa — With far less traffic on the road due to business, school closures and stay-at-home-orders, more Americans are speeding at alarming rates. 

And Iowans are no exception.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, drivers caught speeding at 100 mph or more were up by 58% based on a four-year average. In just the first seven days of May, 36 citations had already been issued to drivers who were pulled over for driving 100 mph or more. 

ISP Trooper Jon Stickney shared a photo after a driver was caught going 107 mph in a 55 mph work zone along Highway 218 in northeast Iowa.

The stop resulted in a $1,410 fine, according to Trooper Stickney.

In April 2018, there were 76 speed citations of 100+ mph compared to 65 in April 2019. 2019, 65 citations. 

In April 2020, ISP issued 142 citations. 

Iowa State Patrol wants to remind you to slow down and drive safe.
