WATCH: Derecho tears roof off Cedar Rapids business

The National Weather Service has reported peak wind gusts of 140 mph in Cedar Rapids.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Brendan McCormick recorded video of his first-person perspective of the derecho that ripped through Iowa on Monday. Aug. 10. 

McCormick owns McCormick Painting Services located in Cedar Rapids.

"I thought it would be safest to stay in the shop," McCormick told Local 5. "And that's where the video picked up."

"They were built to withstand quite a lot," he said of his building and the neighboring businesses'. "But not quite a whole derecho."
