Here are the steps to get weather alerts on the We Are Iowa app

The app is free to download and offers customized alerts right down to specific zip codes.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Staying informed when severe weather strikes is one of the most important things to do in order to stay safe.

No matter the season, Local 5's We Are Iowa app is a useful and informative tool for Iowans in every corner of the state.

The app is free to download in both the Apple Store and the Google Play Store.

Inside the app, Local 5's team of meteorologists offers interactive radar, video forecasts, hour-by-hour planners and customized weather alerts tailored to your zip code.

Follow these steps to enable customized weather alerts on an iPhone or Android:

  • Select Settings in the top right corner, then Notification Settings, and then Severe Weather Alerts
  • Toggle notifications ON to get alerts sent straight to a device when severe weather watches, warnings or advisories are issued
  • Choose Change Default Location and choose up to 5 cities or zip codes, either in Iowa or nationwide
  • Go back to Notifications and select Topic Alerts and Notifications
  • Toggle ON weather to receive regular alerts about the forecast
