Severe storms possible Sunday, breezy and colder Monday

Showers will increase Saturday night, then heavy thunderstorms arrive Sunday morning through afternoon. It turns dry and much colder Sunday night and Monday.

NEW ORLEANS — Thunderstorms will roll in during the first part of Sunday ahead of the strongest cold front so far this season. Expect showers and storms from morning through early afternoon.

A few of the storms early Sunday could be strong to severe with high wind gusts or an isolated tornado. The highest threat for high winds and a few tornadoes will be south of the lake and along the coast.

Some street flooding also looks possible under the heaviest downpours. Rain totals look 1-3 inches or a bit more under the heaviest storms.

Rain tapers off from west to east Sunday afternoon round roughly 2 p.m. It then turns dry, cooler and windy Sunday evening with temperatures in the 50s.

Much colder air surges in overnight and during the day Monday.

We'll start Monday cold and windy in the 40s. Skies will clear, and the afternoon will be sunny and windy.

Tuesday morning will be the coldest yet this season with a light freeze north of the lake and frost south. You'll want to protect plants and pets on both sides of the lake.

Tuesday will be sunny and chilly, and Wednesday looks nice before another disturbance passes our way on Thursday with some showers and storms.

We dry out and cool down a bit Friday into Saturday.
