Tracking Iowa's 1st snowstorm of the season

Snow has developed over far northern Iowa, and it will slowly shift southeast towards north-central Iowa. Des Moines will see around 1" by Saturday morning.

ALGONA, Iowa — Iowa's first snowstorm of the season will hit the far northern and northwestern parts of the state Friday night through Saturday morning, with Minnesota the hardest hit and minimal impacts in the Des Moines metro.

Snow has developed over far northern Iowa, and it will slowly shift southeast towards north-central Iowa Friday evening. There may be some rain initially in these areas, so a transition period with sleet and freezing rain is possible. This could lead to some icy road conditions even before the snow arrives.

In central Iowa, scattered rain showers are possible Friday afternoon while it will likely stay a bit drier in southern Iowa. By the evening, snow will move into western Iowa before shifting into central Iowa through the overnight timeframe.

In Des Moines, snow will be possible after 11 p.m.

Des Moines will see around 1" of accumulation by Saturday morning.

Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect Friday through 6 a.m. Saturday.
