March tornado, April storms hit same Winterset home

"We will rebuild on that property there and the house will set pretty much where the old one sat," said Winterset resident Lucas Garrett.

WINTERSET, Iowa —

Severe weather has rocked much of Madison County the last two months, with Winterset the hardest hit.

One Winterset man is pushing forward even with incredible loss.

"The wife and I and the little one was with me ... a couple minutes later, we pulled down Carver [Road], and back to our home and, and it was all kind of over with and there was just debris everywhere," said Lucas Garrett.

Everything inside the home was gone on March 5, and Garrett was already rebuilding before Saturday's storms.

"I was in the RV with a contractor of ours that talked about some plans and started shaking a little bit. I was like, 'Alright, well, let's get out of here'. He's like, 'Yep', so we hopped out and got into our trucks in time. And then we turned around and watched her kind of tip over and slide into my parents."

Sitting in the driveway, yards away from the RV, they escaped just in time. But Garrett isn't going anywhere.

"We will rebuild on that property there and the house will set pretty much where the old one sat."

Garrett hopes to have it tied down and ready to live in as early as December.
