Creating safety plans for children with autism

The death of 16-year-old Jake Wilson is hitting close to home for families whose children have autism.

Wilson was found dead near a creek in northern Iowa a few weeks ago after he was last seen April 7.

Health professionals say it’s best to make a plan to prevent such a tragedy.

“I would suggest for families that they look at their child and figure out what level it is,” said Toni Merfeld of Metro West Learning Center. “Practice the skills and steps to get from point A to point B to make sure they get there independently and safely.”

Another recommendation is the app Angel Sense, a GPS and voice-monitoring software designed for those with special needs.
