POLK COUNTY – A Des Moines man has been convicted of murder in a 2017 drive-by shooting, according to online court records.

Miguel Angel Lorenzo Baltazar, 19, was found guilty by jury Monday on one count of murder in the first degree. Police say Lorenzo Baltazar was a passenger in a vehicle in July 2017 while driving by the 1700 block of Oakland Avenue in Des Moines. Lorenzo Baltazar fired multiple rounds, striking and killing 23-year-old Jeffrey Sifrido Mercado.

A criminal complaint states that Lorenzo Baltazar “fled the area in the vehicle” driven by 22-year-old Anthony Garcia, which attempted to elude police before they both fled on foot, and were eventually detained by police.

Garcia is currently in the Polk County Jail awaiting trial for a felony charge of criminal gang participation. Garcia also faces a murder in the first degree charge in the death of Mercado, which is scheduled to begin in May.

Baltazar will be sentenced May 10.
