Iowa House Democrats elect new leader

News

DES MOINES – We’re continuing to follow the changes Republicans and Democrats made after the election.

The GOP still has control of both houses. But the Iowa Democrats are doing a little shuffling after gaining back a few seats in the House of Representatives.

On Saturday they gathered to pick a new leader. They met behind closed doors and selected Todd Prichard to fill the position. He will have help from Jo Oldsen. She’s the new whip. Democrats haven’t had one for a few years.

Former Majority Leader Mark Smith announced last week that he was not going to run for re-election.

Democrats say after the election they’re prioritizing the budget and water quality. They are set to meet again in December to go over their agenda. And the new session will start up in January.
