2017 murder suspect dies in jail while awaiting trial

DES MOINES – A man set for trial in a December 2017 murder case has died while in jail, according to court documents. 

51-year-old Ricky Hasall was charged with Murder in the First Degree and Robbery in the First Degree in the death of 31-year-old Michael Huckleberry. Huckleberry was found dead in his apartment at the 3700 block of Twana Drive on January 29, 2017.

According to the Des Moines Police Department, officers arrived and spoke with a concerned citizen who noticed the window of the victim’s apartment was left open for days. The citizen discovered Huckleberry when he went to his apartment to check on him. 

Hascall died of natural causes in the Polk County Jail on September 16, according to online court records. Hascall was scheduled to go to trial December 3. 

A co-defendant in the case, 27-year-old Monica Fagan, has a plea hearing scheduled for January 2, 2019.
