DES MOINES - Several residents inside an apartment building the Sherman Hill neighborhood are without a home after an apparent lightning strike hit their building.
It happened during the bad storms that hit central Iowa Thursday night. Des Moines fire crews were called to 707 18th Street to reports of a fire from an apparent lightning strike. According to crews on the scene, they couldn't confirm that lightning had actually hit the building. Residents were at home at the time, but one of them had just returned home from dinner when he saw smoke and called 911.
The street was blocked off for about an hour as crews sawed through the roof and got everyone out safely. Investigators remained on scene to figure out exactly what caused the fire. Two apartments were impacted by the incident.
