WEST DES MOINES - Traffic alert for drivers, a popular shortcut may slow down your daily commute due to construction.
Ashworth road will be closed for several months. The road closure will be from Jordan Creek Parkway to 98th until winter.
The first section of construction that is closing the road will be from Jordan Creek to 81st. That stretch of road is only two lanes of traffic right now, but city engineers have watched the numbers steadily climb to nearly eleven thousand cars per day. Usually twelve thousand is the breaking point.
Crews will be widening the road and replacing utilities during the fall. The road will briefly re-open again right before winter, but then will be shut down shortly after to pave the road. The total project is expected to cost around $10 million.
Construction will begin on Tuesday.
