Chair of Judiciary Committee “initially resistant” to felons’ voting rights amendment

DES MOINES – Not all lawmakers are on board with Gov. Reynolds’ request to put up an amendment that would restore an Iowa felon’s right to vote.

Sen. Brad Zaun (R-Urbandale) is the chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee. He would be part of the leadership that would discuss the amendment, if it’s brought up. Zaun told Local 5 that he has reservations about the proposal.

“I’m initially resistant because I think of the victims,” said Zaun. “No one ever talks about the victims. We have a process in place right now. I have asked the governor’s office to give me the information about how many people have applied, how many people have been denied. We’ll have to talk about all of this in the Judiciary Committee.”

Right now, there is no language that has been put into a bill form about this issue.
