Controversy in Southeast Polk Community School District after teacher fired

Local News

PLEASANT HILL – Southeast Polk students and teachers are firing back after a teacher of 40 years was fired.

According to an online petition, Lois Johnson was fired after a student and their parents reported she mishandeled a situation last week. Johnson reportedly took action to stop a violent and disruptive student. She’s been fired since.

The petition created to support Johnson and encourage the District to reinstate her has garnered over 9,000 signatures.

The Southeast Polk Community School District put out a statement, saying they are investigating the incident:

“We are aware of a petition on social media in support of an individual who worked as a substitute in the District. While we cannot comment on the petition specifically because of confidentiality obligations, our understanding of the facts is different than as set out in the petition. Our focus continues to be on the students we serve and providing them with the best learning enviornment we can.”

The school district is having their monthly board meeting Thursday night at 5:30pm. Viewers tell Local 5 it will be highly-attended and that the incident will be addressed.

Local 5’s Angelina Salcedo will have more tonight on Local 5 News at 10 p.m.
