GMI previews “Apple & Bees” in downtown Des Moines

Local News

You may know what cider is. But what is mead?

“Mead is quite possibly the oldest fermented beverage in the world,” said Jeff Bruning, co-owner of The Royal Mile. “There is history of it being made 4,000 years ago. But it could pre-date beer. It’s just honey and water fermented.”

The Royal Mile will host “Apples & Bees: A Cider and Mead Party” from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday.

Featured ciders from Iowa and the rest of the U.S.—as well as France, Spain, and England—will be served. Admission is free to sample, or 10 drink tickets can be purchased for $30.
