High “energy” reaction to winning the One Classroom at a Time Educational Grant.

Local News

ANKENY- Ankeny middle school teachers Joleen Henning and Kate Harken were overjoyed to learn they won the One Classroom at a Time grant from Bankers Trust and Local 5. The Northview Middle School science teachers are teaching their students about alternative energy, and they have big plans for their $1000 grant.

They want to buy a wind turbine kit that will help the students experiment with wind energy. The kids will then study other forms of renewable energy like solar, biomass, geo-thermal and hydro-electric, and determine which form of energy would best suit different needs.

Joleen Henning is hopeful this exercise will spark the next generation of problem solvers, saying she hopes that “they have control. They have the power to make decisions that will affect and better the future.”

Northview Middle School also wins a cultural workshop from CultureAll as part of this grant. You can find more information on One Classroom at a Time here.
