Iowa family turns loss into a chance to grant wishes

Just over a year ago, an Iowa family lost their daughter the same day their son was born.

Thanks to an idea from one of their friends, they have turned their loss into a way to help other families right here in Iowa with a golf benefit.

Lexi Stiles was born three months early and suffered from seizures. She was just six years old when she passed away in her sleep. Just hours before, baby brother Weston was born.

"In my heart I believe she went to sleep when Robert told her that she had a baby brother. And she never woke up and Weston came early, so I think Weston came early because Lexi couldn't go any longer and she needed to make sure he was here and okay and that we'd be okay," said Lexi's grandma, Robin Stiles.

"She could've lived less than that, she could've lived to 16, you don't know, so it was a shock, but not unexpected. We knew the day would come, just didn't know when," said her dad, Robert Stiles.

And they are keeping her memory alive with the 2nd Annual Lexi Stiles Golf Tournament. Last year, they raised enough money to help grant five wishes for kids and families through Make-A-Wish Iowa.

"We never got to take her to Disney World. She loved Minnie Mouse. So our prerequisite with Make-A-Wish was we would sponsor the first wish and make sure it happened, we just wanted to make sure it went to a child that got to go to disney world and meet Minnie Mouse," Robin said.

"Just to see the smile on their faces and even to see the pictures and videos when they come back of the fun that they had and how much they enjoyed it and you know it meant a lot to them which means a lot to us," said Lexi's dad.

Even though Lexi is gone, her parents will always remember what a great person she was.

"She was truly an inspiration, she really was. She taught me to be a way better person and to love live and share it with everyone and lift everybody up and be positive. I tell myself every day that Lexi would want this and Lexi would want that," said Lexi's mom, Angel Stiles.

"Just the people that still talk about her even when the golf tournament is not going on, you can tell she was a very loving person and everyone cared about here and her for, so i think she'll never be forgotten at all," said Robert Stiles.

Lexi's parents said they will continue to talk about Lexi to her brother and sister and show them pictures so they can know and remember her.

The 2nd Annual Lexi Stiles golf outing is Saturday, June 23. The golf spots are filled but they encourage everyone to come out to the lunch around 11:30. Previous and current make a wish families that they've helped will be there as well.
