SPENCER, Iowa — People in Spencer are grieving over the loss of one of its high school wrestlers who passed away over the weekend.
The high schooler was sent to the hospital after a wrestling match. Spencer High School senior wrestler Austin Roberts collapsed on the mat Saturday night during a match and was rushed to the emergency room. He died in the hospital overnight.
“Not only was Austin an accomplished athlete, Austin was a good kid and a good classmate and the type of student that wouldn’t hurt a flea but was a fierce competitor as well,” said Spencer Community Schools superintendent Terry Hemann. “We are all hurting for Austin and his family and for his classmates and for the staff that had an opportunity to work with him. And we are just doing what we can to help everybody got through this tough time.”
It’s not yet known why he died. The school district is unaware of any pre-existing conditions that may have contributed to Austin’s death. A go-fund-me account has been set up to help the Roberts family.
