Police: business owner shoots alleged burglar to death

DES MOINES - A business owner is shaken up after police say he shot an alleged burglar Wednesday morning.

The incident happened at 7:15 a.m. at 1400 Army Post Road. According to police, 67-year-old Thomas Kraft of Des Moines arrived in the morning and saw a burglar. Kraft is the owner of Kraft Imports and 5 Star Muffler, and proceeded to shoot the alleged burglar. 

The person killed in has been identified as 37-year-old Amund Benjamin Haarstad of Fergus Falls, Minn. 

A truck that had been stolen from Minnesota was recovered at the scene.

Des Moines Police Department detectives continue their investigation. At this time, no criminal charges have been filed.

Police said that this is a likely a stand-your-ground case since the business owner allegedly had the right to protect himself and his property.
