DES MOINES – Rep. Andy McKean, a Republican from Anamosa who has represented Iowans for years at the statehouse, has changed his party.

McKean has served as a Republican for the House and the Senate in the past. On Tuesday, he confirmed that he will now caucus with the Democrats while serving at the statehouse. The balance in the House will now be 53 Republicans and 47 Democrats. Before he switched his party affiliation, McKean had been the longest serving Republican in the legislature, serving seven terms in the Iowa House and three in the Senate.

McKean has served in leadership positions. He is expected to make a formal announcement on the House floor sometime on Tuesday.
