URBANDALE – Sam & Gabe’s Italian Bistro closed abruptly on October 6, leaving a couple who had the restaurant booked for a wedding in the dark.
The couple hasn’t heard anything from the company and they are worried they won’t get their $500 dollar deposit back. They are also concerned they won’t be able to have a reception.
The wedding is scheduled for December, along with the reception. After 7 long years of waiting things were finally planned.
“It was king of like high fives all around calling family and saying, ‘It’s a go! We finally have the go ahead and can start making these plans,'” said Kamy Herbst.
The wedding is planned for 11 a.m. on December 1. A private reception for immediate family was supposed to take place on the same day at Sam & Gabe’s. The abrupt shut down of the business has changed everything.
“I thought, ‘What?! That can’t be right. We booked this months ago. Surely someone would’ve contacted us.’ I thought we shouldn’t believe what we see on Facebook. Curtis had made a few phone calls and sure enough they went unanswered,” said Herbst.
The couple owns their own gym in Johnston. While they are sad to see another local business close, they wish things had been handled differently concerning the reception.
“How do you not contact people and tell them? You know, whether you’re going to issue a refund or not, don’t you owe them something,” Herbst said.
In an effort to help, Local 5 On Your Side got in touch with the lawyer for Sam & Gabe’s.
They say they’re offering a full refund of the money already paid, or they will try and use their connections to get the couple a reception booked at another local restaurant for the same day.
