FAYETTE COUNTY – Thousands of chickens died on the side of an Iowa road early Tuesday morning.
According to the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, they got a call around 1:37 a.m. to a report of a semi rollover on Highway 18, west of West Union.
After further investigation, it was determined that Tony Ray Raske, 44 of Alden, was operating a Red 2012 International TR Semi and hauling a 2017 Load King trailer full of approximately 5,000 chickens.
Raske was heading westbound when he lost control and entered the south side ditch. Raske and a child passenger received minor injuries, but were released on scene. The chickens were rounded up and loaded on to another semi. Approximately half of the chickens were deceased.
The semi and trailer are a total loss. Raske was cited for Failure to Maintain Control.
