West Des Moines Walmart Burglary

WEST DES MOINES – A man accused of stealing weapons from the Jordan Creek Walmart is now under arrest.  Police arrested Cody Gebauer, 28, around 2:45 a.m. Sunday, after police searched for him overnight.
Around 11 p.m. Saturday, Police say Gebauer first walked into Walmart and used a bat to break open the gun cases, before running away with three guns and ammunition.
“And there were police officers on every angle of the street, just every parking lot.,” said Scott Owen, a worker at Draught House next door. “They were blocking off every entrance to this shopping center.”
West Des Moines called in several K-9 units, and the Iowa State Patrol brought a surveillance plane to help search for him.
Police believe Gebauer was able to get away through this exit of the Walmart, near the tire section. More than a dozen officers spent the evening looking for him.
“I think we counted 18 squad cars or something like that and then we go back inside and then somebody said, we heard nine shots fired, and so we came back outside and we heard K-9s going off everywhere,” said Owen.
“The K-9 track went way east of here, basically into an undeveloped area,” said Capt. Travis Ouverson, West Des Moines Police Department. “So, we’re concentrating on that.”
Around 2:45 a.m. Sunday, they finally located Gebauer.
“It appears to be one individual that we are looking for, and we have no known links to any other cases,” said Ouverson.
After interviewing several other witnesses, police determined they had the right man, and took him to Dallas County Jail.
“This is West Des Moines, you never think of anything like this happening out here,” said Owen. “This is a lot of excitement for a Saturday night.”

Gebauer has been charged with Criminal Mischief, Third Degree and Theft, Second Degree.

WEST DES MOINES- West Des Moines Police, the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol spent late Saturday night into Sunday morning, searching for a man who allegedly stole multiple weapons from the West Des Moines Walmart.

Police say someone came into the store, broke into the gun case, and then took off with several guns. Officers say that person was last seen, leaving the tire service door around 11 p.m. Saturday.

West Des Moines called in several other law enforcement agencies, K-9 dogs and an Iowa State Patrol plane to search for the suspect. Detectives were able to recover several weapons by late Saturday, but they were still taking inventory to see if anything was still missing. The K-9 dogs were able to track the suspect to an undeveloped part of West Des Moines, and that’s where the search continued.

By 2 a.m. Sunday, officers called off the search for the night, but it is expected to resume later in the morning.

At this point, police have not released any suspect names or descriptions. They tell us there is no immediate danger to the public. Stay with Local 5 as we continue to learn more details about the story.
