VAN METER - A new safety tool in classrooms is something you've probably seen before.
Van Meter Schools is putting old fire hoses to good use. It was an idea that Assistant Fire Chief Chris Power found while looking at videos online.
"If they can't protect kids sitting somewhere, we decided to put it to use where can protect kids," Power said.
Even though the hoses are often seen on firetrucks, Van Meter Schools believes the simple, resourceful way to implement classroom safety will go a long way.
"If they know that I am coming into a place that is safe it can reduce any anxiety, there might still be some," Power said. "But they will know they will be safe."
All you have to do is take the old hose, slide it over the swing arm of the door, and it will stay shut in times of emergency.
All K-12 classes in the Van Meter Community School Distirct have their own hose for classroom security.
