DES MOINES – The Republican-majority statehouse is celebrating after staying late into Tuesday and early Wednesday to debate the fetal heartbeat bill. The bill passed both chambers, and is now on the governor’s desk.
Local 5 spoke to one of the Senate Republicans who firmly supported the measure.
“People say this bill has been done before, but it hasn’t,” said Sen. Rick Bertrand. “This will be the most aggressive run on Roe vs. Wade. We have a responsibility to create vehicles to make a run at Roe vs. Wade. We know that this will probably never become law in Iowa. We know that this was set up for the courts. I embrace it and I’m excited that it will be embraced by the courts.”
The bill is now on the governor’s desk.
