LAKE VIEW — Sac County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation are investigating a shooting that has claimed the life of a 24-year old female from Guthrie Center, Iowa.
The shooting was reported at 11:38a.m. on Sunday September 18, 2016 and occurred just north of the intersection of Hwy 175 on Hwy 71 east of Lake View, Iowa. The sheriff said a male front seat passenger was handling a loaded 9mm handgun when the gun reportedly accidently discharged. The bullet hit the 24-year old female who was the driver. She was taken to Loring Hospital in Sac City. She was airlifted to a Des Moines hospital where she died of her injures.
Friends of the victim tell us her name is Megan Sloss. Many of them told Local 5 they are “in shock” and were too emotional to do an interview. But they said she was one of the “kindest and genuine’ people they knew.
Sloss was once on the dance team at Central College in Pella. Her coach said she was one of a kind.
“She was just so approachable that all the girls could ask her questions about the routine before auditioning for the team,” said Lexi Hanna.
Hanna coached Megan back in 2012. She was a new coach and Megan stepped up to show her the ropes.
“It was a true blessing as a coach.” Hanna continued.
Even after graduating from Central College, Hanna said Megan would volunteer to critique the team preparing for competition. Hanna said, “she would follow through with that but on a professional level but really be genuine about it as well…. I miss that. Not everybody is like that.”
Funeral arrangements are underway. Stick with Local 5 as more details become available.
