WEB EXCLUSIVE: ‘Fat Tuesday’ in Des Moines celebrates 10 years of authentic Cajun eats

We Are Iowa Originals

DES MOINES- Are you searching for a new local place to grab a bite to eat?

‘Fat Tuesday’ is a New Orleans-style restaurant on Des Moines’ south side. The owners, Steven and Maria James, are celebrating a decade of bringing authentic Cajun food to the metro.

“He’d always loved the way people reacted to his cooking- how it tasted, the flavor of it … and so we opened this restaurant called Fat Tuesday 10 years ago,” Maria James said.

Local 5 got an inside look at the making of their favorite Cajun recipes and how they’ve found success and prosperity in central Iowa.

Fat Tuesday is located at 6112 SW 9th St near the intersection of SW 9th St Army Post Road.

You can check out their website here, or visit them on Facebook. And as the folks in Louisiana would say: laissez les bon temps rouler! (Let the good times roll!)

Brandon Lawrence does some taste-testing!

Local 5’s Brandon Lawrence couldn’t stop by Fat Tuesday without trying some of the food!

You might not know this, but Brandon worked in Louisiana for a few years before moving to Iowa. This was his first time tasting gumbo, jambalaya, and etouffe since living in the Bayou State!
