Weather history of the Drake Relays: Is it always cold and wet?

Since 2000, 18 out of the 21 competitions have seen some rain on at least one day of the Relays.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Drake Relays week is back, and it's off to a solid start weather-wise.

Temperatures soared into the 60s and 70s, with sunny skies in much of the afternoon on Wednesday.

But the rest of the week doesn't look so fine and dandy. Wednesday will likely end up being the nicest day of Relays 2022, as shower and storm chances return Thursday through Saturday.

Luckily, the best rain chances will likely arrive after dark each day. The best chance for rain to impact the event will be Saturday morning. Ironically, Saturday has been the wettest day since the turn of the century for the Relays.

Since 2000, 18 of the 21 runnings of the Drake Relays have had rain at some point during the four days. Two of the three that stayed dry came within the past three Relays: 2018 and last year.

The average high temp since 2000 for the Relays is 64 degrees, just about where we will end up this year. The highest temp at the Relays in the same time period? 90 degrees back in 2012.

Fourteen of the past 21 Relays have had at least one windy day,  where the average wind was 15 mph or higher. The windiest days have been Friday and Saturday, which is what we will see this week too.

Remember last year? We had some snowflakes on the Wednesday of Relays. None of that white stuff coming this year, however.
