Local coffee company sees sales increase after partnering with online retailer during pandemic

Blk & Bold Specialty Beverages is sold in stores at Target and Hy-Vee and online on Amazon.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Many small businesses have seen tough times during the pandemic and although Blk & Bold's experience may have started off that way, the local coffee company was able to capitalize on their partnership with online retailer, Amazon.

The company had just launched it's storefront on Amazon when the pandemic hit the U.S. in February and at first, they were forced to let some of their employees go. But as time went on Blk & Bold saw sales increase because while stores that housed other coffee brands were closed across the nation, Amazon remained open allowing for sales to continue.

"We're a team of about 12 people, and continuing to make the right moves to have a long term sustainable business," said co-founder and CEO Pernell Cezar. "And no better time to pressure test your sustainbale business model than trying to build one during a pandemic."

Blk & Bold was the number one new coffee brand on Amazon during March and April.

Five percent of the company's profits are donated towards organizations helping at-risk youth.

You can find Blk & Bold online on Amazon or in-store at Target and Hy-Vee.
