Massive fire engulfs Urbandale apartment building

The Urbandale, Johnston, Clive and West Des Moines Fire Departments responded to the scene near the 3600 block of Patricia Drive Sunday.

URBANDALE, Iowa — An apartment building in Urbandale is in shambles after a massive fire engulfed it Sunday morning.

Police and fire departments responded to the fire at Ashford Ridge Apartments in the 3600 block of Patricia. The call came in just before 11:00 a.m.

Fire personnel were on the scene for most of the day, and did not get back to quarters until about 10:30 Sunday night.

A Local 5 journalist said a smoke plume could be seen on Interstates 235 and 35.

A representative from Hubbell Properties, which owns the complex, said the fire was contained to one building and has mostly been extinguished.  At this time, the cause of the fire is still unknown.

Fortunately, no one was hurt in the fire.  However, some animals were lost in the blaze, and others are still missing.  Any displaced animal that was found and no reunited with their owner would currently be in the hands of Animal Control, according to the Urbandale Fire Department.

The American Red Cross was on the scene, and is helping all displaced tenants that were living in the building.

Urbandale Fire Chief Scott Lyon says the building does not have a working sprinkler system.  The roof collapsed, and, at least at the moment, the building is estimated to be a total loss.

The fire is still under investigation.  Local 5 will continue to bring you more updates as they become available.
