DES MOINES, Iowa — A motorcyclist is dead after a Friday night crash in south Des Moines, according to the Des Moines Police Department.

Police say multiple onlookers called in about a crash between a motorcycle and small SUV around 8:15 p.m. on Friday.

The motorcyclist, identified as 26-year-old Nicholas Edward Perez of Des Moines, had "critical injuries". Responders performed lifesaving measures at the scene and transferred him to a hospital, where he later died.

Evidence at the scene and witness statements indicate Perez was driving south on SW 9th Street. The SUV was crossing SW 9th Street at Payton Avenue when Perez crashed into the passenger side of the vehicle, according to police.

Excessive speed and failure to yield may have contributed to the crash.
