Iowa State Patrol: Semi-truck driver dies in fiery early morning crash

The driver was headed west on I-80 around 4:30 a.m. Friday when his semi-truck left the road, drove into a ditch and hit a tree. The vehicle then caught on fire.

JOHNSON COUNTY, Iowa — A semi-truck driver is dead after a fiery crash on Highway I-80 early Friday morning.

The Iowa State Patrol crash report says 55-year-old Eric Smith of Show Low, Ariz., was headed west on I-80 around 4:30 a.m. when his semi-truck left the road, drove into a ditch and hit a tree. The vehicle then caught on fire.

The Tiffin and Oxford fire departments, along with Johnson County Emergency Communications, assisted the Iowa State Patrol with the crash. the Fire assisted the Iowa State Patrol.
