Des Moines welcomes first babies born in 2024

Some lucky central Iowa families welcomed new babies into the world just hours into the new year.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Meet central Iowa's newest and cutest residents: Some lucky central Iowa families welcomed new babies into the world just hours into 2024. 

Maddie Sue Hovick was born at 1:31 a.m. on New Year's Day at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. Born to Steven and Rebecca Hovick of Nevada, Maddie weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces and was 19.25 inches long. She is the family's fifth child. 

"We thought she might be a 123123 baby, but Baby New Year is pretty cool too," Steven told UnityPoint. 

Less than two hours later, MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center welcomed their first baby of the year: Kyler Ray Abell was born at 3:24 a.m. to his mom, Devin. He weighed 7 pounds, 7 ounces and measured 21 inches long.
