IOWA, USA — 5,973 initial unemployment claims were filed last week in Iowa, an increase of 791 (15.26%) from the previous week.
5,322 initial claims for the week of March 7-13 were by people who work and live in Iowa, and 651 were by individuals who work in Iowa but live outside the state.
"For the week ending March 13, 2021, nearly 58.1% of claimants indicated their claims were not COVID-19 related, which is a decrease from 59.1% the previous week," Iowa Workforce Development said in a release.
770,000 Americans filed for unemployment last week.
$14,116,844.30 in unemployment insurance benefits were paid out in the state last week, a weekly decrease of $1,665,022.37 (10.55%).
Continuing claims for the week were 40,699, a decrease of 3,314 (7.53%) from the previous week.
IWD said the following industries had the most claims:
- Manufacturing (1,335)
- Industry Not Available - Self-employed, Independent Contractors, etc (1012)
- Construction (458)
- Retail Trade (442)
- Health Care & Social Assistance (387)
Additional data released for last week:
- $27,195,900 in Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) benefits paid, which include retroactive payments and reauthorized payments that went into effect on Dec. 27, 2020. Since April 4, 2020, a total of $1,832,284,933 in FPUC benefits has been paid.
- $3,716,338 paid in Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) benefits. Since April 13, 2020, a total of $218,035,794.54 in PUA benefits has been paid.
- $13,536,623.28 Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) benefits paid. Since May 27, 2020, a total of $273,880,727.16 in PEUC benefits have been paid.
