WEST DES MOINES – The former lawyer of Cristhian Rivera, the man accused of killing Mollie Tibbetts, is speaking out to Local 5 exclusively after he was taken off Rivera’s legal team.

Local 5 had a long-form interview with Allan Richards, an attorney from Toledo. He visited our office Thursday afternoon. We asked Richards how he got to be Rivera’s lawyer.

“When you focus on  what happened on that road, the obligation of the defense and prosecution is seeking out truth in rational, peaceful and efficient manner in order to solve society’s ills,” said Richards. “Give it a chance.”

Richards said that he’s a man of law, and that’s also why he took the case.

“At some point the different groups have to come together and go back to the basic premise,” said Richards .”Equal protection under the law, resolution passed by Congress in 1866. But it says, and anyone in the jurisdiction has equal protection under the law.”

Look for more of Richards’ interview coming up on Local 5 News at 10.
