3rd-annual gas giveaway donates nearly $28,000 worth of gas to community

Sunday's third-annual event celebrating Rob Johnson's birthday gave out nearly $28,000 worth of gas.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Hundreds of people braved the cold on Sunday to partake in Rev. Rob Johnson's third-annual gas giveaway

Johnson partners with organizations across the state to fundraise for this once-a-year giveaway, honoring his birthday. The 2024 event gave out nearly $28,000 worth of gas.

Organizers told Local 5 events like this is important as Iowa experiences dangerously cold temperatures, some relying on their car for heat.

"There's just a lot of insecurity happening in our community. I have a gentleman pulled up and he said, 'You know what, I was trying to figure out how I was going to make ends meet this week, I just got rid of my last $5.' This was right on time," said Deidre DeJear, the cofounder of Back to School Iowa and former gubernatorial candidate.

More gas was donated than ever this year — in 2022, the event gave away around $5,000 in gas, and 2023's giveaway totaled up to nearly $15,000.

And the gas wasn't the only treat at the event.

Hot chocolate, pizza and donuts were also given to those waiting in line, along with free books from the Des Moines Public Library's mascot, Rosie Reader

The long line of Iowans getting their free gas even caused some traffic delays, but the Des Moines Police Department shared thanks for drivers and their patience when it came to the charitable event.

"Thank you to everyone who showed grace & patience in traffic today as our Traffic Unit & NBSD officers joined a small army of volunteers at a charity gas giveaway today!" DMPD shared on X, formerly known as Twitter.
