41-year-old killed in pedestrian-vehicle crash in Polk County

Authorities say 41-year-old Joshua Scott Laird of Des Moines was hit by a car while walking in lanes of NW 2nd Street.

FORT DODGE, Iowa — The Polk County Sheriff's Office has identified the man killed in a Monday night crash between a pedestrian and a car. 

Authorities say 41-year-old Joshua Scott Laird of Des Moines was hit by a car while walking in the "traveled portion of the southbound lanes" of NW 2nd Street around 8:15 p.m. Monday. According to witnesses, Laird was wearing dark clothes and the area was poorly lit. 

The people in the vehicle that struck Laird stayed on the scene as witnesses and first responders attempted to save his life, but he died on the scene.

The sheriff's office said the vehicle's occupants are cooperating with investigators.
